Why isn't this year's seasonal flu sweeping through the way it has in the past?
Still, opinions split on whether H1N1 might come back strongly in third wave of disease before the season is over. And experts also couldn't agree on the probability of seeing some activity from seasonal flu viruses, overshadowed so far by the pandemic strain.
Government officials have been taking great pains during the pandemic to say that there's no way of knowing how the rest of the flu season will play out.
In a briefing by the Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Rams cancel practice due to swine flu
Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo claimed not to know what players had the swine flu, but center Jason Brown and quarterback Kyle Boller missed practice on Wednesday to flu-like illness.
Spagnuolo said there were more players who complained of flu-like symptoms on Thursday morning.
“We had a few more of those this morning,’’ Spagnuolo said. “They went over to the doctor, and we got some of those guys out of here. After that, I was advised by the doctor somewhere in the morning that because there are five or six players who have these flu-like symptoms that it might be best to get everybody away from each other.’’
Spagnuolo said Brown reported for work on Thursday morning, but he was unsure on Boller.
“All the names kind of run together, and I don’t want to throw out a name and be wrong,’’ Spagnuolo said when asked who else had the flu.
Spagnuolo said he wasn’t aware of any coaches or any other workers at Rams Park who were suffering from the flu.
Rams players were sent home late Thursday mornning as “a precaution more than anything else,’’ Spagnuolo said.
Every player visited with the Rams’ trainers before exiting Rams Park.
Some of them already had received a flu shot, and other’s received it before they left on Thursday.
Spagnuolo said the Rams were planning to practice on Friday morning as scheduled.
“The only thing that will happen is that we may have to stretch tomorrow’s practice a little bit longer just to get some of the things in that we didn’t get in today,’’ Spagnuolo said. “It may be a blessing in disguise. The guys will get rested, it’s a little less taxing on their bodies.’’
The Rams are 1-12 overall in Spagnuolo’s first season as head coach.
Asked if wonders what else could go wrong this season, Spagnuolo said, “I just whack them out as they come. I just stand up there and keep fighting.’’
